Autumn break

At AIS we have concluded our first Unit, “Who we are” and this week the students have their Autumn break.

During the past few weeks, Grade 3 to 6 took part in some different outdoor games during the house sessions, see image above. The students were working in teams or individually to compete. House points were awarded to students for things such as cooperation, sportsmanship, participation and enthusiasm. It was great to get outside and enjoy the last of the warmer weather.

We also hosted the annual running event. Well done to all students who actively participated in the Cross Country championships at AIS! We had perfect running conditions in the forest and it was great to see all the students enjoying themselves. Special thank you to all the parent volunteers, without you we could never have had such a successful day.

We hope everyone has a healthy and relaxing break and we are looking forward to continuing our learning next week.

Outdoor learning

This week we completed a series of overnight cabin trips with some of our students. The younger grades were driven to Blåfjellhytta in Heggedal, while the older students endured the three hour hike there. The point of the trip was to get the students out and active in a natural surrounding. They also were taught about vegan and environmentally friendly food and prepared their own meals. Finally, it was an opportunity for them to become better acquainted with their peers and to have fun!

At school, Grade 1 has been busy colouring flags from the countries they and their families come from. The flags are hung up in our classrooms to celebrate the diversity of our students.

This week we will carry out the Nasjonale prøver for our students in Grades 5, 8 and 9. We wish our students the best of luck!

Cycling club

At AIS we have started with a bicycle special lesson for the Grade 5 students. Once a week they are taught about cycling techniques and safety on the road. These skills are very important to have as a child and the activity also allows for the students to be active and have fun.

Grade 1 is continuing to explore their first unit, Friends and Family. This week, the children made a class friendship chain to hang in their classroom. It has been wonderful to see the children making friends and showing caring and respectful attitudes toward their classmates!

For September, the Language of the Month is German. The whole school will be learning some key phrases and we hope to host a few parent led zoom storytelling sessions. If you would like to be involved and help us celebrate German this month, please get in touch with Miss Angie or Miss Rebecca. Danke!

Kicking off the new school year

We have officially completed the first week of school for the 2020-2021 school year. There were many new faces excited to get to know their teachers and classmates, as well as all the returning ones who settled into their new classrooms. This was a different start to the year than what we are used to, but we have managed to make it a positive experience and we aim at keeping up the health standards to ensure the safety of all in our community.

Grade 1 has had a fun and busy week getting to know their classroom communities and making new friends, see image above.

Grade 5B will be piloting a new approach to developing greater student agency this year. The question was asked: what would we do to help our own learning if we had some unstructured time?
