Coding at AIS

In SFO we had a coding day. It was led by the Grade 4 students- Ario, Sai and Thisath who planned and executed these sessions themselves. They did a wonderful job and the students really enjoyed learning how to code.

"For Coding day, we taught Grades 2,3,4 and 5. They learnt how to code minecraft and also tried some tutorials. It was really fun teaching and we would love to do it again"- Thisath, Sai and Ario.

The school is closed this week except for SFO and we will be welcoming the students back on Monday 7th of October to start on the second half of the term.

Research at AIS

Grade 3's unit on healthy lifestyles is in full swing. We have created some healthy and balanced food plates, taken action by advising people on the importance of hygiene and stopping the spread of germs as well as being Scientists and testing how germs affect the food we eat, here is a picture of our bread experiment.

Research is well underway in Grade 7 science lessons. As part of our unit on atoms, elements and compounds, we are taking a closer look at some of the elements on the periodic table. Each student is preparing their own presentation to explain the costs and benefits of one element, answering questions such as: what have helium or titanium ever done for us? What environmental and social problems are caused by our massive consumption of lithium and cobalt? Why does roentgenium not exist in nature? and what is radioactivity anyway?

AIS teachers are learning too! We started our first book club with "Inquiry Mindset" by Trevor Mackenzie and Rebecca Bathurst-Hunt. We started by sharing what we already think about inquiry learning with pipe cleaners. Then we read chapters of the book in groups and shared our notes with each other. At the end we wrote goals for ourselves on post-it notes and stuck them up for everyone to see.#inquirymindset #askerislearning

BlimE dance

Our entire school was part of the BlimE nation-wide dance last Friday at midday. BlimE is an initiative brought to schools and other educational institutions by NRK in hopes of gathering children together to create good memories,  friendships and better relationships at school.

This year, the song was about daring to be one self and having a positive attitude even when we fail. Our children practiced for the dance for the past few weeks and impressed with their energetic performance at the end of the school day.

The SFO team

Meet the SFO Team (2019/20), pictured above. Students are super excited to be back in SFO. This year we have more than 60 students in SFO, ranging from Grades 1-5. We are gearing towards a fun filled year!

Grade 9 have been preparing for their "Immunity Conference" for the last week and they presented their research. They had lots of informative posters about the roles of different parts of the immune system and students shared their newly gained expertise to prepare for their summative assessment in their Health and Disease unit.

The students in 3A have been inquiring into our new unit about how the choices we make can have positive and negative effects on our health. After being introduced to our unit, the students came up with questions that they had about the central idea. The Grade 3 students came up with many thoughtful, thought-provoking questions that will guide our unit.

We can already tell that this is going to be a great year!
