The Principal's Welcome

Welcome to Asker International School

RobertBrownec

Welcome to Asker International School!

It has been my privilege to lead Asker International School since 2013.

We had very humble beginnings, but great aspirations. We started our first school day on Monday 13th August 2013, with roughly 900m2, 36 students and 9 staff members. To say it was a nervy start would be an understatement. We had 2 children in our grade 2 class and 2 in grade 3, with both parents and teachers wondering if they made the right choice. Nonetheless we soldiered on.

By January 2014 we had more than doubled our numbers and we have pushed on since then. Now, the school sits in a new premises, having moved in 2023. We have 600 students from grades 1-10 and roughly 70 staff. We find ourselves located in a modern building and a great location in the supportive municipality of Asker.

We would not be here today without our shared vision, coupled with the intent to put the work in. We strongly believe in modelling the expectations that we set for our students, that our staff embody the Learner Profile and lead by example. We strongly believe in sustainability and this has been reflected in our certification as a green flag school and an Eco-Lighthouse organisation.

Although it feels like we have achieved a lot since we set out in 2013, the journey is just starting. Asker International School is an accredited IB world school in both the PYP and MYP and we have aspirations to include the DP to complete the continuum. There are many bridges yet to cross. Our new leadership group and our wonderful staff have the capacity and desire to continue to grow in our practice.

The journey thus far has been an exciting one. As we enter a new phase of growth and development, I will pass the leadership of the day to day operations to my very capable colleague, Mr. Mark Cringle. Mark, an accomplished practitioner, IB Evaluation leader and public speaker, has been a pivotal cog in the wheel since the early years of the school and knows the organisation inside and out, sharing the same passion for education as all our colleagues.

Asker International School will continue its pursuit to develop global citizens for the world of tomorrow. We hope you will join us.

Mr. Robert Browne

Founding Principal

At a glance

Asker International School is a school recently established within the municipality of Asker kommune. The school first opened its doors in August 2013.

Starting with 5 grades and expanding vertically every year, the school offers an IB structured curriculum. The school started in 2013 with 39 students and 8 employees. We now have approximately 600 students and over 60 staff employed in either part-time or full-time positions. We are fortunate to have waiting lists for almost all our grades.

We are currently registered as an authorised world school in both the Primary Years Programme and the Middle Years Programme, having recently completed an evaluation of both programmes. We are also a 'MOT' school, a 'Dysleksi Norge' School and a Eco-Lighthouse organisation.

Asker International School has students and staff from over 40 nationalities within our school community and we look forward to expanding this representation that provides us a truly international environment.

Our subject provision in the Middle Years Programme is Mathematics, English, Norwegian, Sciences, Individuals and Societies, Physical Education, Performing arts, Design, Spanish and Mandarin. We do not have an elective foreign language at present.

Municipality of Asker

I 2020 Asker became a bigger municipality, with the merging of Røyken, Hurum and Asker into one single municipality.

Asker is located on the outskirts of Oslo, just a 20-minute train ride from the city centre. With forests and hillsides on its verges, the coast to the south and the E18 motorway linking the capital to the south running through its centre, Asker provides the best of both worlds - immediate access to the capital in one direction and a retreat to nature in every direction.

Here are some figures on our new municipality:

8th largest municipality in Norway with 94,185 citizens over 376 km2

An annual budget of 7.3 billion NOK

170km of coastline
