The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The essential qualities of the DP are:

  • a balance of breadth and depth of learning

  • flexibility of choice within the requirements of the programme

  • planning and assessment between all educators involved in the programme

  • a strong emphasis on learning that fosters intercultural understanding

  • the development of skills related to inquiry, research, critical thinking and reflexivity

  • strong student involvement in self-assessment and reflection

  • a sustained experience of community involvement and service

  • rigorous assessment—formative and summative—through a blend of external and internal assessment procedures
